I’ve decided to take a break this weekend. Instead of working on the stuff I’m supposed to be working on, I’m going to write something just for me, just for fun. I haven’t done that for ages and, honestly, it’s starting to get to me. Yes, of course, I know I’m way beyond blessed to have publishers and editors wanting various things from me, but always doing work for someone else takes it’s toll after a while. It stops being fun. There is too much worry and pressure to have your work fit someone else’s idea of what the project should look like.
Mind you, this isn’t a bitching rant. I love what I do and I love the folks I work with. But I’ve found that you need to stop working and start playing every so often. Then you can come back fresh and rejuvenated. So, that’s what I’m doing. Maybe what I come up with will see the light of day some day, but if not, I’m cool with that. This one is for me.
I suggest you guys do some playing yourselves. It’s a new month. Start it right, if you can. And, if you see me around on the internet, swear at me unmercifully because it probably means I’m working in some capacity. Probably promoting or networking.
So, GO! Don’t be a dull boy (or girl.)
I now have my own section over at Brian Keene’s forum? It’s true! So, despite having forsaken all forums- umm, maybe two years ago?- I’m now gonna be jumping back into that saddle and chatting about work stuff, random stuff, silly stuff, sexy stuff.
Ok, maybe not sexy stuff, but you get the idea. Come say howdy. I’m sure I’ll eventually make a putz out of myself and you don’t want to be the only one who misses it!
Plus, you can chat with a whole slew of awesome writers (including the mighty Keene himself) and fans alike. Do it! Go register and get your chat on!
Huge thanks to Brian for including me. He’s a rad guy and a great writer. If you haven’t read his stuff–what the hell is wrong with you????
I hope not, but for today, I can say I’ve beat Stephen King on a list of ‘Best Of’ horror titles for the year. Crazy, right? Yes, but true! Over on The Authors Speak my novel House of Fallen Trees has the honor of being the number one pick of the Toppers in Horror Fiction 2010. And, even better than that, also making the list are some of my own favorites, including David Agranoff, Brian Keene, Douglas Clegg and the aforementioned King himself.
Pretty sweet! And because it may never happen again, I think I’ll celebrate the hell out of it today. Hope you guys join me by picking up a copy of the book, as well as the other books on the list. After all, Christmas is right around the corner and you’ll be giving to us, the writers, as well as to family and friends, which would certainly improve the year for all of us!
So, major thanks to The Authors Speak. Definitely give their website a browse, if you haven’t already. Great interviews can be found as well as reviews.
Love to all!
“The Devil doesn’t make us do anything. The Devil, for example, doesn’t make us mean. Rather, when we’re mean, we make the Devil. Literally. Our actions create him. Conversely, when we behave with compassion, generosity, and grace, we create God in the world.” – Tom Robbins
“This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.” – Walt Whitman
The Kindle version of House of Fallen Trees has been doing pretty good. My best seller, by far. And being that’s it’s almost Halloween, I figured I’d give it a little promo plug here. The adjective that I hear most often for this one is CREEPY. Which is good, because quiet, slow-burn, atmospheric, creepy horror is exactly what I was going for. So, if that sounds like your kind of spook-fest, I hope you check it out and let me know what you think.
And, if I don’t get back this way before the big day, have yourself a super-gooey, super-sticky, super-SPOOKY Halloween!
Very happy to announce that my haunted house novel, House of Fallen Trees, is now available for Kindle HERE and it’s only $2.99.
Many thanks to all who check it out!
I’m super-excited to announce that I’ll be a guest of honor at next year’s Mo*Con in Indianapolis. So mark your calendars: May 20th-22nd, 2011. Lots of cool folks will be there (check the link!), I’ll be doing panels and who knows what else. It’ll be a great time and I want to see YOU there!
Huge thanks to Maurice Broaddus for asking me!
I’ll post more updates as the date draws closer. In the meantime, start saving your nickels for the plane tickets. Bow wow wow yippie yo yippie yay.
I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be attending Context 23 in the very fine city of Columbus, OH, August 27-29. This will be my first time attending this particular con, but I’m really looking forward to it. Seeing old friends and meeting new ones is probably the best part of this crazy job I have.
I’ll probably be spending a lot of time in the dealer’s room, hanging out with my publisher Grindhouse Press. And, of course, at the parties. So, if you’re in the area, definitely come by and say howdy. I would absolutely love to meet you!
